Do You Actually Need This Yet?
Before you spend this kind of money, here is what to look for.
You need it if:
- The surface is rough enough to scrape feet or swimsuits
- You can see grey gunite or bond coat through the finish anywhere
- Aggregate is letting go, or plaster is chalking off into the water
- There is structural crazing spreading, not just surface hairlines
- Staining survives a proper chemical wash
You might not need it yet if:
- It is discolored but still smooth
- The staining is organic
- Nobody has actually tested what kind of stain it is
CHEMICAL WASH OR RESURFACE?
A pool interior can only take so much. After multiple traditional acid washes—often around three—a finish may already be approaching the end of its serviceable life. Every aggressive acid wash removes material from the surface, and when chemical washing isn’t performed using professional best practices, that damage can accelerate.
The reality? Not all chemical washes are created equal. Many are performed as a quick fix rather than a calculated process built around protecting the pool interior. If the history of your pool is unknown, our team can evaluate the condition of the finish and determine the right path forward.

We recommend draining and professionally chemical washing your pool approximately every two years, based on water conditions and interior needs. Proper preventative pool maintenance helps manage water quality, protect the interior finish, reduce buildup, and support the longevity of your pool and equipment.

Plaster, Quartz, or Pebble
Plaster (marcite). The traditional white finish. Cheapest to install, shortest life, and the gap is wider here than the national figures suggest because our water is hard on cement. A legitimate choice when budget is the constraint, on a rental, or if you are selling soon. Just know what you are buying.
Quartz. Plaster with quartz aggregate. Better durability, real color range, meaningfully better resistance to the mineral and chemical punishment our water dishes out. The reasonable middle and the right answer for a lot of pools.
Pebble. Exposed aggregate. Longest life, best chemical resistance, best in-water color, most expensive, slightly textured underfoot depending on the product. Best long-term value in this climate if you are staying in the house.

The First Thirty Days Decide the Next Fifteen Years
This matters more than which finish you pick, and almost nobody explains it.
New plaster is chemically alive when it goes in. It is curing, releasing material into the water, and the water is reacting back. What happens in the first month determines whether you get the full life out of the finish or whether you get mottling, streaking, scaling, and grey blotching that is permanent and cannot be fixed without doing the whole thing again.
Our water makes this harder than most places. Hard fill water on a fresh finish is a scaling problem waiting to happen. Get the balance wrong in week one and you have baked calcium into a brand new surface.
Startup is a process, not a day. Brushing on a schedule. Chemistry tested and adjusted repeatedly. Chlorine held off until the surface is ready for it. Someone who knows what the water is actually doing.
Ask every contractor you are considering what their startup protocol is. If the answer is “fill it and we will come back,” keep calling. It is the cheapest question you can ask and it tells you the most.
