Read This Before You Replace a Motor
The rules changed and most people have not heard.
For years, the standard cheap fix on a dead pump was to leave the wet end in place and bolt on a new single-speed motor. As of September 29, 2025, that is no longer legal for most residential pool pumps. Federal DOE efficiency standards now require that replacement pump motors at or above 1.15 THP be variable-speed. Most 1.5 and 2 horsepower pumps sitting in East Valley backyards are at or above that threshold.
In plain terms: if your single-speed motor dies and it is a typical 1.5 or 2 HP unit, you cannot swap in another single-speed motor. The next step is a variable-speed pump.
A few things this does not mean:
- You do not have to replace a working pump. If your single-speed pump runs, keep running it. Nobody is coming for it.
- You can still repair it. Seals, o-rings, baskets, lids, impellers, diffusers, unions, and capacitors are all still fair game. The restriction is on motor replacement, not on repair.
- This is federal, not an Arizona thing. You cannot shop around it, and any company telling you they can source you a single-speed motor is telling you something you should think about.
The rule extends down to smaller motors in the 0.5 to 1.15 THP range in September 2027.
We are not thrilled about telling people their cheap repair got more expensive. We would rather tell you now than after you have paid for a diagnostic somewhere that quotes you a motor they cannot legally install.

How We Work
1. We diagnose before we quote. Electrical check, flow check, visual on the wet end and seal plate, and we look at the whole path rather than the one part you called about. Pump complaints are frequently filter problems and filter complaints are frequently pump problems.
2. You get the quote before we start. Parts and labor in writing.
3. We tell you when not to buy from us. If your capacitor is bad and the pump has years left, we are not quoting you a new pump. If your motor is dead and the DOE rule means the only path is a new variable-speed unit, we will tell you that too, even though it is the answer nobody wants.
4. We size and program it properly. This one gets skipped a lot. A variable-speed pump dropped in and left on factory settings is a single-speed pump with a nicer display. It has to be programmed to your pool’s actual volume, plumbing, and turnover requirement, or you paid for efficiency you are not getting. If you already have a VSP and nobody ever programmed it, call us. That is a cheap conversation with a real payback.
5. No contract. One repair or ongoing service. Up to you.
